Trans Rail , Siberian variant across Mongolia instead of ending up in Vladivostok, was our main means of transport. Always buy tickets on the fly and never had trouble finding seats. Although the sellers do not speak a word of English is relatively easy to acquire the tickets. Just type in Cyrillic names start and destination stations, the date and approximate time desired. Showing the piece of paper is sufficient. You can pay by credit card.

Keep in mind that whenever train timetables are in Moscow time and we have to throw stones to add or subtract the time difference when you're in different time zones. In Irkutsk, for example, are five hours ahead of Moscow and if you put the train leaves at 6 pm, actually depart at 11 pm.

The Trans.

We always travel in Kupe class (second class), which are closed compartments for four people. Prices vary depending on the distance and quality of the train. Those with the lowest numbered (1 through 10) are the most modern and expensive air-conditioning and plasma screen in the cabin. The three figures are the oldest, especially from 300, and some have air conditioning, even in Siberia is not very necessary.

The whole journey we were met by about 600 euros per person because we do quite a few stops, which push up the price. Is much cheaper to pull the whole way. You can also save money by traveling in third class (platskartny), which are doorless compartments for six people.

Each car has a provodnitsa or provodnitso, who is in charge of giving you the sheets, vacuuming, tell you when you arrive at the destination, etc..

Russian train ticket. Visa

Russia: The Web Russian Consulate in Madrid www.rusmad.com details of all the documentation needed to pump the tourist visa that is valid for a maximum of 30 days. Although the site states that the visa will only be processed through an agency, not true and individuals can also go in person to arrange their own visa seeking appointment by phone or internet. We did it by phone.

Documents required are:
  1. Invitation-Voucher: In theory it is necessary to submit an invitation from a Russian hotel or agency, but can also be purchased online. We got it on the web of Expresstorussia for 15 euros. You send it by e-mail after three days without problems.
  2. original passport: valid for at least 6 months and at least two blank pages. Form
  3. Full: PDF download on the website of the Russian consulate.
  4. Photo: Attached to the questionnaire
  5. Travel Insurance: You must include the name of the insured and the term. Should be hired with an authorized agency that listed the website of the consulate.
Expresstorussia Invitation. Providing

all this documentation and paying the consular fee of 35 euros I obtain visas in a week. To go to pick it up no need to make an appointment.

Russian visa.

Once in Russia is necessary to record the damn visa at the hotel where you stay because otherwise the police can fine you. The record is a stamp you on the immigration card to enter you are in Russia and you should hold on to the exit. Some hotels give you a piece of paper instead of seal you the card. In theory you only need to register in the cities where they stay three or more days, but we record all hotels in case. Some offer the service free, others charge a few rubles and others, as in Moscow, nearly 20 euros stolen.

We had no encounter with the police during the whole trip, so do not know if it really does not register in each city or not. On leaving Russia not paid much attention to the seals that we had in the visa.

Mongolia: Mongolian The visa can only be processed at the consulate in Barcelona, \u200b\u200bwhose web www.consuladomongolia.com details the necessary documentation:
  1. original passport, valid for at least 6 months.
  2. Complete Form: The download on the website of the consulate.
  3. Photo: Attached to the form.
  4. Health Insurance: You can be the same as that of Russia if it covers both countries.
  5. Notes: You need to present your ticket or reservation of transportation in and out of Mongolia, but also serve as tickets to its neighbors (China and Russia). We deliver ticket to St. Petersburg and return from Ulan Bator.
  6. photocopy of proof of income of consular fees: They are 70 euros and you have to pay Caja Madrid for transfer or deposit into the account detailed in the website of the consulate.
After gathering all the documentation can be delivered in person at the consulate in Barcelona and, as in our case, send it in an envelope by courier. We did it by MRW for just under 30 euros delivery and collection. We must put a blank envelope with your address for the consulate to give it to the courier for pickup. Take a week to manage.

Accommodation Hotels in Russia are expensive and value for money of the world's worst. Hardly find a room for less than 60 euros and is often quite poor. Outside Moscow and St. Petersburg there are hostels for backpackers and just sleeping in dilapidated Soviet hotels at exorbitant prices. Mongolia, however, is a cheap destination and is easy to sleep for little money.

Food & Drink Best places to eat in Russia are the self-service restaurants where the food presented in counters and the weight they charge you the dishes of your choice. They are cheap, have traditional Russian food and are in all the cities because they are frequented by Russians. For 10 euros you can dine well. Also many fast-food establishments and in many supermarkets often sell prepared dishes. The beer is cheap in Russia although it is sometimes difficult to get the serve you cold. Vodka is also cheap.

is very cheap in Mongolia in Ulan Bator to eat and there are lots of restaurants of all kinds. Outside the capital, rice, goat and potatoes are the staple foods that accompany travelers for tours of the country.

Baltica Beer is the most popular in Russia. Weather

You can expect to move heat and cold. In summer the temperatures are very high in European Russia, easily surpassing the 30 degrees in Moscow and St. Petersburg. We agree with the greatest heat wave in recent history and we had never been as hot as in Moscow. Over 40 degrees and no air conditioning in almost anywhere. By contrast, in Siberia it rained a lot and walked in some city to 8 degrees during the day, even colder at night. In Mongolia there are also the two ends and you can roast in the sun during the day and freeze you at night. Money

The Russian Ruble is the currency (1 euro = 39 rubles) and easy to find ATMs in every city. They come almost every corner, hotels, supermarkets, etc. You can also pay by credit card in most shops.

Ticket of 10 rubles.

Mongolia's currency is the Tugrik (1 euro = 1.650 tugriks). Only tickets for the coins have little value and are no longer used. In Ulan Bator numerous cash and in many shops also accept dollars and euros. Outside the capital there is to go with a good supply of cash shortage because tugriks and small shops do not accept dollars or euros.

St. Petersburg

landed at Pulkovo Airport St. Petersburg at noon after a stopover in Warsaw with Polish Airlines LOT. The border formalities were quick and fluid, unlike the bad reputation of Russian customs. In fact, the police gave us an entry stamp was on the phone and do not even pay attention.

To reach the center we took a van line (marshrutky), very popular in Russia, which left us at the metro station Moskovskaya . Then continue by subway to get to Hostel Nord, the hotel we had booked online.

appears in the Lonely Planet located within walking distance of Winter Palace, but in reality there are only receiving and dorms. Rooms have spread in the private apartments, but are not misplaced. Ours was crying out for reform, but the room was acceptable and the shared bathrooms were a little makeup itself. The double cost us 75 euros per night. To pay three advance gave us the fourth. The registration of the visa cost 6 euros, but forgot to charge us and set us free seal.

St. Petersburg, built at the mouth of the Neva River , and crossed by an extensive network of channels is without doubt one of the most beautiful cities in Russia. Its historic center, replete with sumptuous palaces and buildings of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, is ideal for walking. Stresses the

Winter Palace, former residence of the czars and spectacular scenery of the Bolshevik revolution. Now houses the Hermitage collection , one of the world's leading art galleries. Entry costs 400 rubles (10 euros) but worth it to pay to visit its hundreds of rooms. All tickets are expensive tourist attractions in St. Petersburg.

The magnificent Winter Palace Square with the Alexander Column in the center, is the most iconic and photographed in the city. Nearby are the gardens of Admiralty and enormous St. Isaac's Cathedral, from whose dome is getting good views the Neva.

Another highlight is the strength Peter and Paul, the oldest building in the city, which stands on the island of Petrograd, across the Neva. Within is the church of San Pedro and San Pablo , with a golden needle-shaped dome of 122 m, visible from anywhere in St. Petersburg. Along the walls of the fortress there is a beach where locals sunbathe and swim in the cold waters of the Neva. The busy

Nevsky, the main commercial artery of St. Petersburg is another good place to stroll watching the colorful domes of the church Savior on Spilled Blood and Kazan Cathedral. Further away is the baroque Smolny Cathedral , designed by Rastrelli, the architect of the Winter Palace.

the Soviet lovers should not miss the monument to the Heroic Defenders of Leningrad and Moskovskaya square, dominated by a huge statue of Lenin in front of the former home of the soviets.

must also spend a day visiting the palaces near St. Petersburg. We went to Catalina in Tsarkoie Selo, which hides the famous Amber Room , and that of Petrodvorets, noted for its spectacular fountains along the Baltic Sea.
To
beers can go to the plaza Sennaya , with many bars with terraces and restaurants nearby. It's worth dining at the nearby St- Lenin's Bar, a Soviet restaurant with good food, decorated with busts of Lenin and communist paraphernalia. Unfortunately

St. Petersburg is also famous for the racist . always think you exaggerate the tour guides when they see this phenomenon, but sadly we were witnessing a part of two Russian military against a boy of Indian or Pakistani appearance. That day the city was full of military Russian Navy celebrating some sort of party. All were dressed in typical sailor shirts and carried on drinking plenty of plazas and parks since the morning. The assault occurred in a subway car full of people, around 8 pm. Without a word the boy approached and began punching and kicking. Nobody intervened. In St. Petersburg

spent four nights and we bought the train tickets to go from Novgorod to Moscow in the office of Russian Railways, which appears in the Lonely Planet, near the Kazan Cathedral (2,800 rubles / 71 euros) . A Novgorod went by bus and we bought tickets before leaving on the same bus Avtovokzal 2. Leaves one almost every hour, so no problem finding seats. The ticket costs 340 rubles (8 euros). It takes 4 hours.
