Salzburg is probably the most beautiful city in Austria and also the most touristy. The birthplace of Mozart is bisected by the River Salzach and dominated by the impressive Festung Hohensalzburg, a fortress almost 1,000 years old, built on top of a steep hill in the historic center. Admission is EUR 10.5, but also includes the price of the funicular that takes you to the castle. The panoramas are Salzburg unbeatable.
Back to the old town to be missed for its cobbled streets and magnificent squares, hiding churches, museums and other treasures, such as cemetery of the church of San Pietro (St. Peter Stiftskirche ) with beautiful carved crypts in the rock. Getreidegasse Street is the main artery of this cluster of narrow streets, always full of people, shops and restaurants. The Christmas markets create a welcoming atmosphere that helps combat the cold this time of year.
Across the river is worth the steep walk Linzergasse , one of the busiest shopping of Salzburg, and the close Steingasse , which preserves the city's medieval past. On this side of the Salzach rises another hill, which offers good views from their balconies. It is also a prominent location Mirabell Palace, the seventeenth century, and its beautiful gardens, the scene of the Oscar-winning film The Sound of Music .
When night falls you can also visit the Museum der Moderne , located on top of another hill that goes up by an elevator. The concrete building and the views of the city are better claim collections inside. The Mozart Museum and home home also are a must for lovers of the great composer.
In Salzburg we stayed at the hotel Hofwirt , well located and highly recommended. Double with breakfast and parking cost us 70 euros, although in high season prices rise.
