Konjac (Glucomannan)

The Konjac is a plant native to Southeast Asia as well as areas of Japan, China, Korea and Indonesia. Only has a single, large sheet of up to 1.5 meters. Its botanical name is Amorphophallus konjac (Aracaceae). The name "Amorphophallus" is the characteristic shape of the plant. The konjac is used for culinary purposes many Asian dishes, especially in Japan, however, interest lies in the health field because it is obtained glucomannan, also called glucomannan , obtained from the roots and rhizome of the plant.


chemical composition. Glucomannan consists of a mixture of complex polysaccharides, branched mannose chains linked by molecules of mannose and glucose. Not absorbed or digested, therefore do not contribute calories to the body.

pharmacological properties.

• Digestive system: mechanism of action is similar to the seeds of plantago . These plants act as bulk laxatives, ie a high mucilage content which act mechanically by swelling and increased fecal. Glucomannan can absorb over 100 times its volume in water, thus forming a very thick gel that causes a feeling of fullness and decreased appetite. Once absorbed in the intestine to reduce LDL cholesterol levels, and acts as a mild laxative.

Therapeutic. Glucomannan is indicated for treatment for restricted diets for the treatment of overweight, and control of hypercholesterolemia. Can also be used in cases of constipation and diarrhea, useful for regularizing bowel function.

Unwanted effects and contraindications. very well tolerated, although it can cause flatulence, and should not be provided with oral medications, it will decrease its absorption. Separate take 1 or 2 hours minimum. Even in patients with stenosis (narrowing) of the esophagus or intestine.

administration and dosage forms. glucomannan powder should be administered either in capsules or sachets. Always take along with plenty of water and about 30 minutes before meals.
-Capsules: 1 to 2, 500 to 750 mg.
-Envelopes: 1.5 g.
